From the Desk of the Executive Director, Rodney Jackson
Happy May Day! It’s a new month with goals to accomplish, and high expectations for a warm and sunny spring. While we might see May as the height of spring, May 1st is celebrated in many cultures with a special festive ceremony or parade to welcome the fullness of spring. It is also the Feast of St Joseph the Worker, the patron saint of workers.
Please make sure to check out all of the exciting events planned for the Month of May:
- Our monthly theme meal, “Remembering Hess’s Patio Restaurant”
- Mother’s Day Sunday brunch (May 8th)
- Memorial Day Picnic.
Again, I want to extend an open invitation for families to attend any and all of our functions. You are always welcome!
And, we always welcome your comments or suggestions!
My door is always open.
– Rod Jackson, Executive Director
News from Chef Jim’s Kitchen
May kicks off with our Mother’s Day Sunday brunch. All are welcome, please join us! Brunch will feature both breakfast and lunch option.
Starting on Memorial Day, our patio picnics return! Come out to the patio and enjoy the outdoors with hot dogs and hamburgers right off the grill. (We’ll also serve our picnic menu in the dining room if you prefer to sit indoors).
After Memorial Day, our patio picnics will continue every Wednesday at lunch until Mother Nature sends us back inside next fall. The menu changes weekly throughout the summer, featuring fresh salads, grilled items, and delectable desserts. The weekly picnic menu will vary slightly from the indoor menu, so I encourage everyone to come out get some fresh air and try something new!
The theme meal for the month celebrates memories of the Hess’s patio restaurant. The dining room will showcase Hess’s themed items and we will be featuring Hess’s famous strawberry pie. Bakers club will meet later in the month so if you have any recipes you would like for us to feature please let us know.

We’re celebrating moms on Mother’s Day, and many mom’s favorite place to shop: the legendary Hess’s Department Store.
Hess’s was a mainstay of downtown for decades, and several of our residents are former employees. Come out to our Hess’s program presented by the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum, as well as our theme meal celebrating the famous Hess’s Patio Restaurant, featuring the famous strawberry pie!
Keeping with the vintage vibe, our ladies’ tea will be a 50’s soda shop theme. Remember sharing a Coke with your friends at a local shop?
At the end of the month we’re celebrating Memorial Day with a picnic on the porch. Let us remember and honor those who died while serving in our country’s armed forces.
