From The Desk Of The Executive Director
I started working with seniors at what was formerly called Department of Public Welfare just a year after I finished college. Ever since then, I have learned and grown through each and every senior who has entered my life.
Now it is time for me to turn the reins over and start a new chapter in my life. My husband recently retired, so we are going to take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy some of the different things that life has to offer!
It has been a true privilege to serve the residents, families, and leadership of this vibrant community. Each resident of DevonHouse has a unique story to tell, with a lifetime of experiences that molded them into the individual they are today.
DevonHouse residents have been on the “front lines” of 20th century history, from World War II to Viet Nam. Some were raised during the Great Depression, while our younger residents were raised in the period of prosperity in the 50’s and 60’s. The women rose up through the ranks of the working world to break through the proverbial “glass ceiling” and stake their claim in previously male-dominated positions. I admire and honor their resilience.
I will miss each and every person who has made DevonHouse the premier senior living community in the Lehigh Valley. DevonHouse owner Vivian Stephan will be assuming the role of executive director. She is a very familiar smiling face in the community! Please join me in welcoming her in her new role.
Thanks for the memories!
News from Chef Jim’s Kitchen
This month we’re celebrating Labor Day and Grandparents Day, and getting ready for fall. On Labor Day, we’re having a special picnic outside on the patio. Join us!
Our Grandparents Day brunch is on Sunday, September 9th. The menu includes a delightful mix of breakfast and lunch favorites, with a featured special omelet. The guest seating is at 1:00 pm, however if this seating fills, we will offer space at the noon and 11:00 am seatings. (Otherwise, these seatings are for residents only.) We can accommodate up to eight guests per resident. Please be sure to RSVP to Melissa.
Later in the month, I’ll be working on the fall and winter menu. Look for those menu changes in October!

News from Activities
Grandparents Day is September 9th, and I’m looking forward to seeing you at our annual brunch!
Speaking of Grandparents Day, this is always the time of year we grow our family tree! I’m looking for photos of residents to add to our family tree in the living room. I will copy the photo and give you the original back immediately. Let’s see some new faces on our family tree wall!
Did you know that we participate in the Lehigh County Veterans History Project? This project works in conjunction with the Library of Congress to videotape and document each veteran’s story, complete with memorabilia, medals, and more. They will give a DVD copy to the veteran, as well as file the information in the Library of Congress. Let me know if you are interested so we can schedule an appointment for you.
Please remember to join us for our annual volunteer picnic on September 10th at 6:00 pm, where we honor our local first
responders and all DevonHouse volunteers.
Finally, please join me in wishing a very happy 102nd birthday to John Buritsch on 9/19!
-Melissa Bartynski, Director of Activities
P.S. You can see more about the activities our residents enjoy on our facebook page. Schedule highlights for the month are here.
